Humans have always been able to see some galaxies with the naked eye. In the Southern Hemisphere the Magellanic Clouds (they look like clouds!) are super visible and they are galaxies orbiting our own! They have been known since the beginning of human kind, but no-one knew they were other distant “islands” of stars!

It was only in 1908 that Henrietta Leavitt discovered a way to measure distances to galaxies. Like a cosmic ruler! Then we discovered that galaxies are incredible far away! First a few million light years away, then further and further.

The furthest galaxy that I discovered is at 27000000000000000000000 km away!
