Probably the first time I looked at the night sky and saw the Milky Way. I was lucky to spend all summers in Alentejo, the southwest of Portugal, where you could see the Milky Way pretty much every single summer night without any light pollution.
Between loving and being fascinated by space and actually considering a career in it was a long way! Apart from wanting to be a football player when I was really young, followed by wanting to be a medical doctor, an astronaut, a writer and then a theoretical physicist, there were plenty of other areas I was fascinated by. In the end, it was all about my fascination for Physics, then black holes, and then getting to experience real research just before starting University. I really loved it and it has been awesome ever since!

I have loved space for as long as I can remember. I loved reading about it and watching TV programs and films. I thought science fiction was great and I wanted to do all those things – go to space, visit other planets and meet aliens. But I also loved looking at the stars – seeing the constellations, and looking at the planets. I remember the first time I saw the rings of Saturn through a little telescope I got for Christmas – it was the most amazing thing. And then when I learned that there are clouds onMars – and even snow storms, I was hooked. So to be able to study the weather on another planet is so interesting (and lots of fun) and I hope to go there one day and see the clouds on Mars for real, while the snow falls around me!

Space is something that has always fascinated me because of its enormous size but I didn’t really become interested in it until I was in my mid-20s! It didn’t occur to me that I might be able to learn more about it and actually understand why various things happen in space! The more I learnt, the more interested It still amazes me that there are billions of stars and who knows how many planets roaming the universe.

I used to watch cartoons as a kid that involved space, and like a lot of people I would think about going up there and exploring the universe! Then as I got older, people started to tell me that it’s really hard to be an astronaut and I shouldn’t look at space for my job, but actually, there’s so much you can do to study space even if you’re not an astronaut you’re self! I realised that I could help explore space so I started to study space at university and haven’t looked back since.
