Believe it or not, I didn’t start being a scientist until I was 30! My first degree was in business and economics and I worked as a wealth (money) manager. I then started to get interested in rocks and began collecting them. The next step was an Open University degree in Natural Science: Earth Science and I changed career, which is when I think I became a proper scientist! So it’s never too late 🙂
I was interested in science from a young age, I had chemistry sets and used to mix up random things in my house to see if I could get a crazy reaction (or explosion…) when I was growing up I had hundreds of ideas about what I wanted to do ranging from magician to doctor and everything in between.
I probably became a scientist when I started studying physics at university, but I didn’t feel like a scientist because there was so much I didn’t know! Since then I have worked as an engineer and then come back to do a PhD in physics. If I have a bad day or an experiment doesn’t go right sometimes I still don’t feel like a scientist!
