Rockets are made of a mixture of materials! Some materials are for power and propulsion, that’s to ensure that the rocket can reach and stay in space (not forgetting fuel!) Some materials are used for shielding from tricky elements like re-entry, where spacecraft can experience super high temperatures. Another difficult factor can be radiation, which has the potential to interfere with sensitive equipment on board. Materials scientists and engineers work together to come up with the best types of materials to have successful missions in challenging conditions.
